Dominique Ansel Bakery (Cronuts!)

Special delivery from my friend AJ, who is easily my favorite person of the day!

AJ got up bright and early to line up at Dominique Ansel Bakery at 630am! The bakery doesn't even open its doors until 8am!  After more than a two hour wait, she scored these beautiful creations!

The Cronuts only come in one flavor each month. This month's flavor is Morello Cherry with Toasted Almond Cream (with vanilla sugar).

The Cronut tasted devine! The pastry was covered in vanilla sugar and topped with a cherry glaze. The cherry with toasted almond cream oozed out of the flaky layers as I bit into the Cronut.  The creme was fresh and of  very high quality.

This is definitely one genius dessert, deserving of all the hype.  I have heard some say that the Cronut is just a croissant filled with creme. I completely disagree. While the flaky layers of the Cronut may resemble a croissant, the Cronut doesn't taste anything like a croissant to me. It's definitely a very unique creation.  One that I wish I can get my hands on on a regular basis.

Given the hype and scarcity of these Cronuts, there are many knockoffs in the market. Having finally tasted the real thing, I can say that Paris Baguette makes a decent knockoff. PB's version is filled with custard creme, which doesn't come close to the quality of the fillings of the real Cronut. However, it is not a bad option considering the alternatives. I don't know too many people who are willing to wait in a 2 hour queue for these special creations.
