Taiwanese pork bun is one of my favorites! When I found out that there's a food truck that specializes in these buns, I was eager to check it out.
Fun Buns NYC is a tiny little food truck. I think it's usually parked on 50th Street, beteeen 6th and 7th avenue. I confirmed its location via twitter before heading over. I was surprised that there was no queue during busy lunch hour. Made me wonder if this is a bad sign...
I got the traditional pork belly bun which is also stuffed with relished greens, sugar peanuts, and cilantro. The buns looked better than they tasted. There were large ginger slices stuffed in the bun. Fooling people into thinking there were more pork belly than actually there? 1 slice of pork belly with 2 slices of ginger? Seriously?! The little bit of pork belly that was in the bun was tender, but too much fatty bits.
I also got a Peking duck bun, which I modified (instead of cucumbers and scallions, which I hate, I asked them to garnish it with something else. That something else ended up being kimchi, which really didn't go well with the flavors of the Peking duck). This was my bad.
Verdict: BB. I really wanted to like this truck, but the quality is just not there. Even at $3 a piece, I'm not likely to return. It's a shame because I think there's a huge missed opportunity. I guess I'll continue to trek out to Flushing ( specifically Taipei Hong) to get my pork bun fix.
