Taiwanese Shaved Ice (@ 東區粉圓 Eastern Ice Store)

This is my go-to place for traditional, Taiwanese shaved ice.  For $60NT ($2 USD), you get a big bowl of shaved ice with 4 toppings of your choosing.  The place is quite popular and is pretty much bustling at all hours of the day.

Mango Shaved Ice (@ Ice Monster)

Ice Monster is the original creator of the Mango Shaved Ice, a dessert that has turned into quite a food craze in recent years. Ice Monster started out in a small store front on Yong Kang Jie, a street populated with hole-in-the-wall restaurants and street vendors, popular with tourists.  It has since moved into a large, modern space on ZhongXiao East Road.

Depending on what time of the day you go, there could be a queue outside the store.  While waiting you can feast your eyes on these cute mini-popsicles.

Once inside, you place your order at the cash register (English menu is available), pay, and then find a seat in the main cafe. They will call out your order when it's ready and you pick it up at the counter.

The portions of these shaved ice are gigantic!  I guess that's how they justify the steep price of $180-240 NT ($6-8 USD) per order. One is definitely enough to share between two people.  However, the store had a minimum per person $ order requirement, so you can't really get away with sharing one dessert amongst a few people.

This is the signature mango shaved ice, with mango ice-cream, and fresh mangos. You can choose between 2 types of shaved ice. The top bowl is made with soft, fluffy, snowflake ice and the bottom bowl has the traditional crunchy ice.

It is hard to compare Mango Ice with Traditional Taiwanese Shaved Ice.  I think both should be on the must-try list of any culinary tour through Taiwan.

Taiwanese Shaved Ice (@ 芋頭大王)

This little hole in the wall on Yong Kang Street sells traditional Taiwanese Shaved Ice in its purest form…ie. coarsely shaved ice, with toppings of choice, drizzled with sweetened condensed milk.  There were probably 8-10 toppings to choose from, all housemade .  I got taro and red bean as toppings.  The taro was cooked to perfection!

I love the simpleness of the shaved ice here.  No frills.  Just great ingredients prepared the old fashion way.
